What Is the Famous Painting With a Man Praying at the Table?

The most famous image that meets this description is a photograph by Eric Enstrom entitled “Grace” (1918). Enstrom’s daughter, Rhoda Nyberg, later colored this photograph with oil paints, giving it a painting-like quality.

“Grace” depicts a man named Charles Wilden praying over a loaf of bread. Although the original version of this photo is colorless, Nyberg’s colorful painting is the most commonly reproduced rendering of the photograph. The painting has become one of the most recognizable images in all of American art. It is now a common fixture in homes and churches nationwide. In 2002, “Grace” was named the official state photograph of Minnesota – the home state of Eric Enstrom.
