Examples of social needs include love, belonging, acceptance and safety. Satisfaction of these needs is important in order to feel supported and accepted. Having one's social needs met also helps prevent problems such as loneliness, depression and anxiety. When a person develops an emotional connection with other people, he can more easily cope with depressing situations and can find strength through interacting with other people.
When a person has a problem in life, he is likely to call someone who encourages and supports him during such situations. He can be free to share his feelings openly with a person he trusts. This provides comfort and possibly solutions and can motivate him in many ways.
A person can find encouragement when he achieves emotional connections with family, friends, social groups, partners, colleagues and others. Disabled people often need to feel a sense of belonging so they are not isolated as a result of their disability.
People who are at danger of exclusion include ex-prisoners, poor people, homeless people, AIDS patients and psychiatric patients. These groups may experience social isolation, stigma and deprivation. Social need is a wide concept that involves physiological needs and interpersonal relationships. A person feels safe, motivated and supported when all his social needs are met.
