What Are Some Examples of Physical Illnesses?
Some examples of physical illnesses are cancer, diabetes, Parkinson's disease and pneumonia. Other examples of physical illness are the common cold and sickle cell anemia.
Cancer is a group of diseases that are characterized by an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Common types of cancer begin in the lungs, breast, uterus, brain, stomach, blood, large intestine, pancreas and skin.
Diabetes occurs when the pancreas either no longer produces insulin to regulate glucose, or the body resists the insulin that the pancreas produces. Type 1 diabetes is considered an autoimmune disease and happens when insulin-producing cells are destroyed. Type 2 diabetes usually happens later in life and can be the result of obesity.
Parkinson's disease is a disease of the central nervous system. It occurs when the body doesn't produce enough of the neurotransmitter dopamine. It leads to tremors and muscle rigidity. Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs and bronchial tubes. It can be cause by bacteria, a virus or a parasite.
The common cold is a contagious infection of the upper respiratory tract and is caused by a virus. Sickle cell anemia is an inherited illness where red blood cells are deformed into sickle shapes. Patients are subject to crises that cause excruciating pain and place them at risk of complications such as stroke.
