What Is an Example of a Patriarchal Society?

An example of a patriarchal society is where men are responsible for leadership and establishing laws while women stay at home to care for the children. Ideally, the family name only comes from the man.

Patriarchy may also refer to a type of government where men are in charge of every action and dominate the cultural and social systems. This kind of system is a good portrayal of the gender inequality that preempts women from making any real progress in life. It has manifested itself in the political, social, economic and legal organizations of different cultures. In many cultures, for example, women are not allowed to own or inherit property or receive an education; they are viewed as property and are considered morally, intellectually and physically inferior to men, with their sole purpose in life being to reproduce and take care of the home.
