General Motors is the manufacturer of Saturn vehicles, including engines. General Motors released Project Saturn in 1982 in an effort to produce a small American car that would compete with the popular Japanese-made cars of that time.
General Motors realized that younger car buyers of that time were purchasing smaller, more cost-efficient Japanese-made cars. GM's response to that was Project Saturn. It took eight years for the first Saturns to be sold, and by that time, Saturn had branched off into its own corporation with its own employees and its own dealer network. The first Saturn factory was in Springhill, Tenn.
