What Is the Dr. Russell Blaylock Scam?
Dr. Russell Blaylock is the editor of The Blaylock Wellness Report, a monthly newsletter that claims to offer alternative health information. Physicians have strongly criticized Blaylock, especially for his stance on vaccination, on prominent medical blogs Science-Based Medicine and Respectful Insolence.
The Blaylock Wellness Report website lists 26 years in neurosurgery among Blaylock’s credentials and describes him as challenging the “establishment.” Dr. Mark Crislip, a physician who specializes in infectious disease, wrote on Science-Based Medicine deriding Blaylock’s arguments that widespread vaccination does not lead to so-called herd immunity and that all vaccines cause long-term inflammatory reactions that contribute to serious health problems. Surgical oncologist Dr. David Gorski has also repeatedly referred to Blaylock as a “crank” on his blog, Respectful Insolence.
The Blaylock Wellness Report website mentions as a credential Blaylock’s past role as editor of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons. Gorski, in a Science-Based Medicine post that does not mention Blaylock, criticizes the organization that publishes the journal, the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons, for lending support to vaccination opponents and those who deny that the HIV virus causes AIDS, opposing all government involvement in the health care system, and other reasons.
Despite being mentioned approvingly on the Blaylock Wellness Report website and disapprovingly on others such as Science-Based Medicine and Respectful Insolence, and regardless of holding apparent credentials and experience as a physician, Blaylock is not generally in line with mainstream American medical thought and practice.
