There are 23 ingredients in Dr Pepper, none of which are known to the public. The unusual flavor was invented by a pharmacist who created the soda flavoring to replicate the smell of assorted fruit syrups in the drugstore where he worked, according to the Dr Pepper museum.

The only clue given by the company about the ingredients in Dr Pepper is that the product does not contain prune juice. Legend has it that druggist Charles Alderton invented the first Dr Pepper at Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas in 1885. After considerable testing, Alderton offered a taste of the syrupy concoction to Wade Morrison, his employer. Wade Morrison is credited with giving the dark soda its name.

Dr Pepper was introduced to the American public at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri in 1904. Dr Pepper dropped the period from its name in the 1950s.
