According to the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association, a horseshoe pit must be between 43 and 75 inches long and between 31 and 36 inches wide. The stake is placed in the center of the pit.
The NHPA allows clay, dirt, sand and certain synthetic surfaces to be used as the pit substance. The chosen pit substance must be at least 4 inches deep. The stake is to be 1 inch in diameter and between 14 and 15 inches tall. The playing court for horseshoes is 6 feet wide and 46 feet long, with the opposing stakes spaced 40 feet apart.
