The dimensions of a standard checkerboard are 16 inches by 16 inches. The board is divided into 64 2-inch squares. The total area of the board is 256 square inches.
The board consists of alternating light and dark colored squares; red and black are often used. The red side always makes the first move in a game. The American Checker Federation rules state that boards used at tournaments should be green and white or off-white, unlike the more common red and black. The pieces used to play are given numbers 1 to 32 to make keeping track of them easier.
