How Do You Determine If a Pan Is Oven Safe?

Most cookware is marked with a symbol that indicates whether it is oven-safe. If there are no symbol markings, it is still possible to determine whether the pan is oven-safe by examining the material with which it is constructed. It is important to note that different materials can withstand different maximum temperatures in the oven.

Owners can check the back of the cookware and look for a series of symbols. These symbols often indicate that the cookware is oven-safe, dishwasher-safe, induction cooker-safe, electric cooker-safe, gas cooker-safe, and microwave oven-safe. The symbol used to determine that cookware is oven-safe is fairly standardized. The websites of cookware brands Master Cuisine and Tramontina provide lists of the symbols used on their products. Most cookware brands use similar symbols and markings.

If there are no symbols on the back of the pan, or if the symbols have faded with use, it is still possible to determine whether the pot or pan can be put in the oven. Rachel Ray provides a list of common handle materials and the maximum oven temperatures they are able to withstand. As a general rule, no cookware with plastic components or a non-stick coating should be placed in the oven because these materials melt in high temperatures.
