A municipality is typically a term for a city or town, so individuals can identify their municipality as the place where they have official residence. Dictionary.com defines a municipality as a city, town or other district possessing corporate existence and usually its own local government.
A municipality can also refer to a community under municipal jurisdiction. Those living in unincorporated rural communities may be under the jurisdiction of a nearby city, county or district. This information can be obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau, county tax records, school district zonings or from local police departments. The term can also be used to identify the governing body of a district or community.
