The loft degree of golf irons typically ranges from below 20 to 41 degrees. However, there is no official loft assigned to each club; angles may vary slightly across manufacturers.
Designed for shots up to 170 yards, the 2, 3 and 4-irons are referred to as "long" irons. These clubs feature lofts of less than 20, 20 and 25 degrees, respectively. The 5, 6 and 7-irons, known as "middle" irons, are suited to achieve distances of 140 to 160 yards and measure 28, 31 and 34 degrees, respectively. "Short" irons are designed for use close to the green; an 8-iron typically has a loft of 37, while a 9-iron is 41 degrees.
