A typical cube of butter is a 4-ounce stick, wrapped in wax paper and sold four to a carton. The volume of one stick is approximately 9 tablespoons, although the wrapper is usually marked for 8 tablespoons.
Butter is the fatty portion of milk, separating as a soft whitish or yellowish solid when milk or cream is agitated or churned. The watery liquid left behind is buttermilk. Butter is used as a spread and a condiment on food. Butter is also used in cooking, such as baking, sautéing and frying. Butter contains butterfat, milk proteins and water.
