Salty lips or a salty taste in the mouth can be a symptom of several conditions, including dehydration, postnasal drip and hormonal changes, explains Columbia Health. A salty taste is also a common side effect of chemotherapy and many medications, according to Dr. Lennard-Love of Sutter North Medical Foundation.
Dehydration and dry mouth are common causes of a salty taste that has only been around a few days. Treatment involves drinking plenty of water, chewing sugar-free gum, and avoiding overly salty and spicy foods. A doctor should examine patients who experience persistent salty lips or mouth to rule out more serious medical conditions that require treatment, advises Columbia Health.
