What Are Comparisons Between Rizal and Bonifacio?
Though they differed in their approach to achieving national pride, reform and independence, Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio are both highly regarded as Philippine heroes. Rizal was in favor of a pacifist approach to reform, whereas Bonifacio opposed the Spanish colonial rule through military engagement.
Jose Rizal is best remembered for his literary works “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo.” Both novels criticized the Spanish regime’s abuse and corruption while encouraging national identity. On the other hand, Andres Bonifacio is known for founding the militant group called Katipunan. Though inspired by the ideals and novels of Rizal, Bonifacio fostered the Katipunan as an armed resistance movement in order to establish Philippine independence.
