Crayola crayons were first sold in a box of eight colors in 1903.

Crayola added 40 crayon colors in 1949, 16 in 1958, eight in 1972, 16 in 1990, 16 in 1993, 24 in 1998 and four in 2003. The company retired eight colors in 1993 and four more in 2003. It has changed the contents of its crayon boxes many times and has also renamed a number of colors.
