How Close Can You Park to a Fire Hydrant?

Although rules vary according to the municipality, in most places drivers must park a minimum of 15 feet away from either side of the fire hydrant or face a penalty. A parked vehicle owned by the fire department and clearly marked may be parked nearer to a fire hydrant.

Exceptions exist in certain circumstances. If a licensed driver is behind the wheel of the parked vehicle and prepared to move it immediately, parking closer than 15 feet is allowed. Local officials may also choose to shorten the length under special circumstances. If that is the case, they are required to post a sign stating the new required distance.
