What Churches Hold Services on Saturday?
Traditionally, seventh-day churches including Seventh Day Adventists, Seventh Day Baptists and Church of God (7th Day) have services on Saturday. Roman Catholic Churches offer Saturday mass and a growing number of Evangelical churches provide Saturday evening services as of 2015.
Seventh-day churches hold services on Saturday according to the traditional Sabbath from the Bible. These groups believe humanity remains obligated to the 10 Commandments, including remembering the Sabbath and keeping it holy. However, most other Christian groups choose to worship on Sunday, in commemoration of the resurrection of Christ.
Pope Pious II allowed local ordinaries to offer Saturday night mass. The 1983, the Code of Canon Law made the practice universal. Following the tradition of a day beginning at sundown, the mass celebrates using the same readings and prayers for both Saturday night and Sunday morning mass.
In Evangelical churches, Saturday evening services have grown in popularity due to the hectic schedules of many parishioners. Saddleback Community Church offers two Saturday evening services, both with the same activities for children and youth that are available Sunday morning.
The First Seventh Day Adventist Church in Huntsville, Alabama, offers Saturday services like most other Seventh Day congregations. However, it also offers Sunday morning services. According to the church’s pastor, the Sunday morning service offers a first point of contact for those who are unable to worship on Saturday.
