There are several names for Chinese temples, and they are generally based on the religion with which each temple is affiliated. Buddhist temples alone are known as pagodas and grottos and are called Ta and Shiku respectively.
The famous Confucian temple known in English as Harmony and Peace Palace Lamasery is referred to as Kong Miao Yonghe Lamasery in Chinese. Taoist temples, as with Buddhist temples, are known by generic terms, in this case, Gong, Guan or An in the Chinese language. There are many temples associated with Chinese Christians and Muslims as well. These are known by the same names – mosques for Muslim temples, for instance – by which they are known by elsewhere in the world.
