The wall of the cheek is referred to as the buccal mucosa. This membrane surrounds the outer portion of the buccal pouch. The teeth and gums make up the inner portions of the two pouches that make up the lateral sides of the mouth, or oral cavity.
The outer parts of the cheeks also make up the area known as the jowls on the sides of the face. This area also includes the part of the face directly below the eyes that extends back to the front of the ear. It also goes down the face to the lower part of the jawbone.
