A “check engine” light is illuminated when there is a problem with the car’s drive-train system. In order for the light to turn off, the car’s computer has to completely lose power from the vehicle or be manually reset.
Common Ways to Reset the “Check Engine” Light
- Unplug the battery Unplug the battery from the car for 30 seconds. Unfortunately, this also resets the radio unit.
- Unplug the ECU Fuse Locate the ECU fuse in the fuse box and remove it for 15 seconds.
- Use a Diagnostics Machine A diagnostic machine connects directly to the ECU and allows the user to reset any codes the computer has found.
