What Does Your Cervix Feel Like Before Your Period?

A woman’s cervix feels low, firm and closed before her period, according to Ovuline. The cervix becomes firmer during the period, but remains low and closed.

Women can track their menstrual cycles by checking how high or low their cervix is in the vaginal canal, and determining the firmness and the openness of the cervix, according to Ovuline and the Beautiful Cervix Project.

Most menstrual cycles are about 28 days long. The ovarian cycle begins on the first day of a woman’s period. The ovarian cycle has two phases, the follicular phase in the first 14 days, followed by the luteus phase over the next 14 days, according to OpenStax CNX. Ovulation typically occurs on day 14. Women are most fertile 48 to 72 hours before ovulation and 12 to 24 hours after ovulating, according to WebMD.

The cervix gets harder as the woman approaches her period, states Beautiful Cervix Project. During the menstrual period, the cervix feels the hardest and feels low and closed. Then it starts to soften, but still feels firm until it reaches ovulation, when it is softest, high and open. During the fertile window, the cervix has a medium firmness, medium positioning and medium openness.
