Pain under the arch of the foot is usually caused by a condition called plantar fasciitis, explains About Health. Plantar fasciitis involves inflammation of the band of tissue that connects the heel to the toes. The pain is typically worse in the morning and after long periods of standing.

Plantar fasciitis often develops without an identifiable reason, explains The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Those who are obese, have very high arches, or engage in repetitive activities such as running or sports are an at increased risk of the condition. Tight calf muscles that make it hard to bring the toe up towards the shin also contribute to the development of plantar fasciitis.

Pain in the ball of the foot, also known as a stone bruise, can be caused by strenuous activity and ill-fitted shoes, says WebMD. Morton’s neuroma is a condition that causes pain in the bottom of the foot behind the base of the toes. Most common in women who wear heels, this condition involves thickening of the tissue surrounding a nerve between the third and fourth toes. A fractured heel bone may cause pain in the heel and is typically caused by sudden impact to the heel.
