Most people can treat minor leg pain at home by resting the leg, applying ice to the area three times a day, elevating the leg and using over-the-counter pain relievers, explains Mayo Clinic. For more serious pain, a person may want to schedule an office visit with a doctor. A person should see a doctor for leg pain that occurs when walking, swelling of the leg, pain that gets worse and if home treatment does not improve symptoms after several days.
A person should see a doctor if experiencing leg pain with signs of infection, a swollen leg or a leg that looks pale or cool to the touch, states Mayo Clinic. It is also important to see a doctor if there is calf pain, especially after sitting for long periods of time; swelling with breathing problems; or any other serious symptoms that develop quickly. An individual needs to seek emergency medical treatment if there is a leg injury where the bone or tendon appears, if the person is unable to walk on the leg, if there is redness or warmth in the calf, or if there is a grinding or popping sound in the leg.
