Severe pain in the big toe is the most common symptom of gout. According to WebMD, gout may cause joints to become very tender and painful to the touch.
Gout can affect any joint, but 70 percent of people suffering from gout have their first outburst in their big toe. The pain is often intense, and it may cause difficulty walking. The pain usually develops over a few hours and may last for up to several weeks. The symptoms may reappear every few weeks or months, or they may not happen again for years. When left untreated, gout may progress and affect more than one joint.
