Common causes for thick and sticky saliva include dehydration, Sjogren’s syndrome, dry mouth syndrome, sarcoidosis, iron poisoning and cystic fibrosis. Abnormally thick and sticky saliva is usually accompanied by other symptoms in all of these conditions, states WebMD.
Staying well hydrated is a good way to avoid thick and sticky saliva caused by dehydration. When sticky saliva is caused by dry mouth syndrome, avoid frequent intake of acidic beverages and caffeine based drinks, as these may increase the sensation of dryness, states Sjogrens Syndrome Foundation. Dry mouth can be caused by prolonged use of certain medications or chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hepatitis C or depression.
