What Can Be Used Instead of Maple Extract?
While there is no exact substitute for maple extract, a cook may choose to use an imitation maple flavoring. The imitation flavoring may slightly affect the taste or appearance of the finished product.
Instead of using an imitation flavoring, a cook may decide to substitute another extract, such as vanilla, almond, butterscotch or rum. Substituting a different flavored extract will affect the taste of the baked goods.
Whether substituting an imitation flavoring or another extract, use a one-to-one measurement. Thus, if the recipe calls for 1 teaspoon of maple extract, use 1 teaspoon of the selected substitution.
The FDA requires that an extract, such as maple extract, contain a minimum of 35 percent alcohol by volume.
