Soft pastels are used on both canvas panels and canvas board. The method used for soft pastels on canvas consists of wet painting the pastels alone or using the pastels on the canvas in a mixed medium that may include oil or chalk.
When using soft pastels on canvas, artists generally use a nonblended style consisting of a heavily textured application. Blending is possible, though, by using oil pastels as a resist on the canvas followed by a layer of the blended soft pastels over the oil. Soft pastels are also used in layers on canvas if a fixative is used over each layer. After painting on canvas, the canvas must be framed under glass to protect the image.
