To troubleshoot ABS problems on a Ford vehicle, first cycle the engine to rule out a passing glitch. Then, inspect the fuses, the ABS controller and the wheel speed sensors. If necessary, take the vehicle into a Ford dealership for an ABS controller scan.
- Cycle the engine
If your ABS light is illuminated on your dashboard, shut the engine off. Wait a few minutes, and turn the engine back on again. If the light goes off, the problem was likely due to a passing glitch.
- Rule out common problems
Check the fuse that controls your ABS light. Replace it if necessary. Open the hood, and access your ABS controller. Check it for cracks, breaks and corrosion. Look for broken or frayed wires. Replace any wires that have signs of corrosion. Clean the controller contacts to eliminate problems due to buildup. Turn the vehicle on to see if the light turns off.
- Check wheel speed sensors
Get under your vehicle, and locate the wheel speed sensors; look in your service manual for the exact location. Check for loose wires and signs of corrosion. Replace any parts that have been damaged due to scraping on the undercarriage. Test the resistance of each sensor, keeping in mind that some Ford models have active sensors that require the key to be on to generate a signal.
- Scan your ABS controller
If the problem remains, bring your car to a Ford dealership or a mechanic that is experienced in repairing Ford vehicles, and ask them to scan your ABS controller. Make a note of any trouble codes that the scan reveals, and ask the shop operators for the meaning of each code. Determine whether or not the problem areas are within your capability to fix.
