Glasses that are scratched can be repaired with one of a variety of treatments, many of which are found within the home. One way to remove scratches is to use a cloth fabric made of soft wool and a small amount of non-abrasive toothpaste. Rub the scratch circularly for about ten seconds before rinsing the lens with cool water and wiping dry.

If a hard-to-remove scratch has formed on eyeglasses, use the above method and repeat the process as many times as necessary. Continue to buff the glass until the scratch is totally gone.

GlassCrafters.com states that, like toothpaste, baking soda may be used to remove scratches on eyeglasses. Make a thick paste by adding water to the ingredient. Then apply to the scratch by using a soft wool cloth and make circular motions to remove the mark.

According to GlassCrafters.com, scratches that appear on eye glasses made with plastic lenses can be removed by using a product called Armor Etch. The glass-etching compound, which contains hydrofluoric acid, will remove the outside coating as well as the scratches on a plastic lens. Never use the compound on lenses made of glass, as it will damage them. On plastic lenses, apply the substance on either side of the lens and rinse and wipe dry after five minutes.

In order to prevent scratches from occurring in the first place, keep eyeglasses in a cushioned and durable case. Never place glasses inside a purse or pocket without placing them inside some sort of protective case or covering. GlassesCrafter.com advises cleaning lenses each day with mild soapy water before rinsing them and drying them with a clean and soft cotton cloth. The site adds never to use anti-bacterial soap for cleaning an eyeglass lens.
