When a transmission, differential or gear box is removed from a car, the first step is to raise the car in the air using a two- or four-post car or truck lift. The transmission jack is then placed directly underneath the vehicle’s transmission and raised until the jack comes into contact with the surface of the transmission. Next, the transmission is lifted by the jack above the rest of the engine block. This step ensures that the transmission can be safely separated from the engine block. Because transmission jacks are categorized by how much weight they support and how high they are able to lift that weight, it is important to know exactly how much weight needs to be lifted and to what height. Most passenger cars have fairly lightweight transmissions and can be handled by a transmission jack with a lifting capacity of 500 to 1,100 pounds. Utility vehicles and trucks require a jack with more lifting capacity, usually 2,000-3,000 pounds.
