Chiropractic adjustments and manipulations may help decrease inflammation and pain by improving spinal function, according to Spine-health. Physicians may also recommend epidural steroid injections to reduce inflammation and decrease back pain. Injections deliver steroid medication directly into the affected area to increase mobility that allows patients to exercise, move and heal.

Surgery for lower-back pain may be necessary in extreme cases, explains Spine-health. For individuals with abnormal spine curvatures, degenerated discs and sciatica, surgery to relieve pressure on compressed nerve roots may be helpful.
