Romance scams are attempts, typically by Ghanaians, to solicit money from unsuspecting foreigners over the Internet. Often, the money is requested to buy flight tickets or visas. Sometimes it is requested as a loan to pay medical bills, in which case the scammer may promise to repay upon their future receipt of an inheritance.
Although the scam is well-known by local police and foreign governments, little can be done to recover transferred funds. This is because the scammers are highly adept at evading detection.
