Inmate release dates and details relating to their crimes are often listed on the Department of Corrections website for each state, and websites for local and county law enforcement offices. If the prisoner is incarcerated in a Federal prison, information can be found on the Federal Bureau of Prisons website.

Independently operated websites, such as The Corrections Connection, provide inmate search tools and links to state inmate locator websites. As of 2014, VINELInk, the National Victim Notification Network website, provides crime victims access to information about criminal cases and incarceration status in all states except Kansas, Maine and South Dakota. The website also allows crime victims to receive notification when a prisoner’s custody status changes.
