To open a locked bedroom door, stick an unfolded paper clip into the hole next to the knob, press it in and turn the knob. If the door remains locked, insert a credit card between the latch and door frame, and wiggle it as you turn the knob. This five-minute procedure requires a paper clip and a credit card.
- Prepare the paperclip
Unfold a paper clip so that half of it sticks straight out. Use a large, thick paper clip to minimize the chance of the clip breaking off inside the lock.
- Insert the paper clip into the lock hole
Insert the unfolded portion of the paper clip into the tiny hole next to the doorknob. Do this carefully to avoid scratching the metal.
- Push and twist
Push on the paper clip, and turn the doorknob while you maintain pressure on the paper clip.
- Insert a credit card
If the paper clip does not open the lock, remove it, and insert an expired credit card or hotel key between the door frame and latch mechanism.
- Wiggle the card
When you feel the card make contact with the door latch, wiggle it back and forth while twisting the doorknob. If the lock does not open, stop turning the knob, and push firmly on the door as you wiggle the card against the latch. Do this until the lock opens.
