Cooking macaroni-and-cheese without milk is easy and quite similar to cooking it with milk. The same process is followed, except the milk is substituted with replacement ingredient, such butter and water, or sour cream and yogurt for a thick and creamy consistency.

Macaroni-and-cheese is an extremely popular dish made up of macaroni pasta and cheese mixed in a creamy sauce that is either cooked on the stove top or baked in the oven. Traditionally the dish is made with cheddar cheese, but it is such a versatile dish that almost anything can be added to it. Some popular ingredients to add to the dish include bread crumbs, hot dogs, onions, tuna, ketchup, ground beef and vegetables. It can be made from scratch or prepared using a packaged mix which comes with macaroni and a packet of cheese mix. Many people choose to create a healthier version of this calorie-high meal by substituting the milk, butter or cheese with a low fat replacement such as cottage cheese and water.

Although it is known as being a quintessential American comfort food, its roots can be traced back to Italy and its popularity extends to all of North America, the UK, Europe and Australia.
