Boats can be looked up by boat name or hull number on the NOAA Fisheries Office of Science and Technology website, as of 2015. The NOAA provides access to the United States Coast Guard database of all registered vessels.

All boats manufactured in or imported to the United States after November 1, 1972 should have a registered hull identification number (HIN). This includes sail boats, fishing boats, commercial vessels, kayaks, canoes and jet skis. The HIN is different from the state registration number, consists of 12-15 characters, and provides information about the boat’s manufacturer, as well as the date and location of manufacturing.
