How Can You Learn the Spanish Language?

The best way to learn Spanish is by speaking the language. Students can practice by speaking to others or can start out by speaking to themselves. A great tool is finding a native speaker to use as a conversation partner.

Some basic tools for learning the language are to use flashcards and to label surroundings. Make cards that are small enough to easily carry. Put the Spanish word on one side and its English translation on the other. By carrying the cards, any downtime, such as standing in line, riding on the bus or waiting for class to start, can be used to practice the language. Similarly, making labels of household things and placing them around the house is another simple way to practice words for everyday items.

To develop an ear for the language, find ways to listen to the Spanish language. Language is oral communication, and getting used to the sounds helps in learning to use the language. Some fun ways to do this are to listen to Spanish music, watch Spanish movies or watch Spanish cable TV.

Be patient. Try not to get discouraged, as learning plateaus are normal. A student cannot expect to consistently make the same amount of progress. In times when learning feels stuck, a good tip is to try spending time reviewing past lessons. This often helps a student move through to the next level.
