According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, diarrhea is not a symptom of gallstones. It can be a symptom of chronic gallstone disease, however.

Symptoms of gallstones include jaundice, dark urine, light stools, rapid heartbeat and low blood pressure. Fever, chills, nausea and upper abdomen pain that comes and goes can also be an indicator of gallstones.

While gallstones can be uncomfortable for the patients, there are usually few serious complications that result from the condition. If the stone moves into the bile duct, however, it can cause a blockage. This leads to inflammation and infection that requires medical treatment.
