Smoked salmon, whether fresh or vacuum packed, can be frozen for three to six months when stored at 0 F. While frozen smoked salmon remains safe indefinitely, the flavor and texture begin to diminish after the recommended storage period.
Vacuum-packed smoked salmon can be frozen as is. Individual servings of fresh smoked salmon should be placed in airtight, freezer-safe bags or containers marked with the freezing date. Smoked salmon will dry out in the freezer if it is not tightly sealed. Frozen smoked salmon should be defrosted in the refrigerator at 40 F or lower to maintain quality and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Refreezing smoked salmon adversely affects its flavor and texture.
