Can You Freeze Okra Without Blanching?

Even though okra is usually blanched before freezing, it is fine to omit blanching, although the okra may be slightly mushy after it is thawed. It is important to use the freshest okra possible for freezing.

In order to freeze okra without blanching it, find okra that is still crisp without any spots, pits or other signs of decay. Wash the okra and pat it dry. If the okra is to be frozen plain, place it either whole or sliced in a freezer safe bag and freeze it. For breaded okra that is ready to fry, slice the okra and dip it in flour or cornmeal. Then spread it out on a pan lined with wax paper and freeze. Once it is frozen, place it in a freezer safe bag.
