Patients preparing for a colonoscopy must refrain from alcohol the day before the procedure, according to Riverside Regional Hospital. Patients may have clear liquids, such as coffee and tea without cream, clear soda, such as Sprite or ginger ale, or clear bullion and broth.

Riverside Regional Hospital explains that patients are given a prescription for a solution to drink on the evening before the colonoscopy. When the solution is finished, patients must drink two glasses of clear liquid of their choice. They should also drink plenty of water to remain hydrated. The solution helps clean out the colon so that the doctor has a clear view of it during the procedure.
