Where Can I Donate Unused Medicine?

Unused prescriptions can be donated to a local doctor’s office, and some pharmacies also accept the return of unneeded medicines. In the United States, the US Drug Enforcement Agency sponsors National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in many cities around the country.

States have varying laws regarding donating prescription medications, and these laws should be checked before donating. Some states allow donations of certain medications or medications donated only by specific groups, such as nursing homes. Other states do not allow any medication donations.

When local donations are not an option, there are organizations that send unused prescriptions to countries that do not have medical care. These organizations can be found online and are often in need of antibiotics, HIV and AIDS medications.
