Can You Convert a Gas Dryer to Electric?

It is not possible to convert a gas dryer to electric. According to the Sears parts team, the number of necessary parts that must be switched out for an attempted conversion costs as much as three new machines. In addition, manufacturers do not cover converted dryers.

Both gas and electric dryers use electric motors to turn the drums, and both use electric fans to move the warm air. It is the source of the heat that differs between the two. Gas dryers use gas burners to increase temperatures, while the heating coils of most electric dryers run on a 240-volt current.

One possible dryer conversion is to alter a gas dryer so that it accepts a liquefied petroleum gas, or LP, hook-up. However, even this is not possible with all gas dyers. The adaptation should be done by a qualified technician.
