The Vernors Store, Walmart and Sam’s Club sell Vernors Ginger Soda. This product is also available at a variety of other retailers throughout the United States.
The Vernors Store sells Vernors Ginger Soda and Diet Ginger Soda. The sodas come in bottles and cans. Customers can also purchase 5-gallon containers of the concentrated soda syrup.
Pharmacist James Vernor brewed the first batch of Vernors Ginger Soda in 1862 and stored it in an oak barrel. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted into the Union Army and fought in the Civil War. During this time, the ginger soda remained in its cask. Vernor opened the barrel when he returned from combat, and the result became a popular item at the Detroit pharmacy’s soda fountain. Soon, Vernor licensed the beverage to a small number of other soda fountain proprietors.
In 1896, James Vernor opened a soda fountain, separate from his pharmacy, where he featured his signature Ginger Soda. Vernors Ginger Soda is now sold by the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, a beverage conglomerate headquartered in Texas. Other brands sold by the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group include Dr. Pepper, Hawaiian Punch, Clamato, Canada Dry Ginger Ale and Country Time Lemonade. The company also sells A&W Root Beer, Diet Rite, Mott’s, Snapple and RC Cola.
