Where Can You Buy Dromedary Date Nut Bread?
Dromedary date nut bread is not commercially available, as of 2015. However, vendors such as the Vermont Country Store sell comparable canned date nut bread.
The Vermont Country Store’s date nut bread is a canned, ready-to-eat bread made with whole wheat flour, barley flour, walnuts and dates. Each quarter-can serving contains 140 calories and 4 1/2 grams of fat. Unopened cans have a 2-year shelf life.
One of the most popular canned breads is B&M Brown Bread in a can. This dense, dark, cholesterol-free bread contains molasses, rye flour, cornmeal and wheat flour. One version has raisins, and the other does not. Each serving of B&M Brown Bread contains 130 calories and 1/2 gram of fat.
Canned bread pairs well with many spreads and toppings, including cream cheese, jam and flavored butters. In New England, baked beans and sliced hot dogs are favorite toppings.
Commercial canned bread is convenient because of its long shelf life. However, many prefer to make it at home in large, ribbed coffee cans. The marks left by the can also serve as cutting guides. Home-baked canned bread usually slides easily out of the greased mold. Commercial varieties, however, are sometimes more difficult to extract in one piece. An effective strategy for this is to remove the top and bottom lids, and gently push the bread out onto a plate.
