How Do You Calculate the Number of Bricks Required for a Wall?

The number of bricks needed for a wall can be found through a simple set of calculations. The area of the wall and the rough size of each brick is needed for an accurate estimate.

  1. Find the wall area
  2. Measure the length and the height of the desired wall. Multiply these two numbers to find the area in square feet. If the wall does not yet exist, use the length and height as indicated on building plans.
  3. Find the brick size
  4. Determine the area of the bricks to be used in the wall. Standard bricks measure 3.6 inches tall by 8 inches long. Remember to add a quarter of an inch to the brick height and width to account for the space taken up by mortar to join the bricks. There are many types and sizes of bricks or blocks available for construction. Take accurate measurements to get the right dimensions. Multiply the length by the height of the brick to find the area.
  5. Divide the wall area by the brick area
  6. Take the wall area and divide it by the brick area to determine how many bricks are needed to fill out the space. Remember to convert square feet into square inches or vice versa when calculating. This provides an accurate result.
