As of 2014, Mattel manufactures Barbie dolls at two factories in China, one factory in Indonesia and one factory in Malaysia. The debut doll released in 1959 was produced in Japan, with a number of other countries following as manufacturers, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Korea and Mexico.
While the US-based manufacturer has based its main operations in China for decades, the dolls were not introduced to that country’s market until 2009, when a violin-playing doll tailored to the Chinese culture hit the shelves. To date, the Barbie doll is available in at least 150 countries around the world.
