What Is an Average Welfare Check?

Welfare payments vary by state, but the average family of four in the United States can receive as much as $900 per month. A single person may receive as much as $200 per month.

There are 39 states where welfare pays more than an $8-an-hour, 40-hour-a-week job. Some states pay much more. By accessing a state’s Department of Social Services website, one can find what benefits are offered, such as TANF, Medicaid and food stamps, and what is required to qualify.

TANF, or welfare, payments, are determined by family size, housing expenses, earned and unearned income, and other factors. Each state has its own requirements and payment scale.
