The average time a person spends taking a shower is 8.2 minutes. Women take longer showers than men but only by several seconds. Each average shower session in America uses approximately 17.2 gallons of water.
The average flow rate for a shower is 2.1 gallons per minute. The amount of time a person spends in the shower can vary by age, with people ages 18 to 24 taking longer showers than people over 55, who often average less than 5 minutes in the shower. Water-saving shower heads with reduced flow rate have no influence on the length of time that people shower.
